Instinct or Intuition?

Instinct or Intuition?

How often do you just know something may happen without having a logical reason for your knowledge? Do you experience a tingling sensation that appears quickly regarding a situation?  This feeling seems to have no rhyme or reason. Think of intuition as the bridge between our functioning, awake state of mind and the underlying unconscious mind.

We all have instincts. For example, it is amazing how quickly and high we can jump when a large spider suddenly approaches. A dangerous situation often does not provide time for analysis and reason. When you see something dangerous, you get out of the way. Instinct is a wonderful thing.

Studies indicate that you apply approximately about 20% of your brain to conscious thought and  80% works behind the scenes with unconscious thought. Your awake brain relentlessly tries to apply logic to situations. Your unconscious brain seems to take in everything. It doesn’t necessarily organize things in a way that you would normally understand. Thinks of your mind as an infinite storage facility.

An example of you using intuition as opposed to logic follows: Let us suppose that you are at a lunch buffet. The array of food is dazzling. As you go through the line chatting with a friend, something about one of the dishes disturbs you. You don’t have the time or inclination to apply logic to the situation. You simply pass up this dish in favor of something else. Later you find out that several people came down with food poisoning from the very dish you passed up. This is intuition. There were probably warning signs regarding this dish you were not consciously aware of. It may have looked or smelled funny. The logical mind did not have time to discover what was off, but instinct knew. Intuition may have bridged the gap between your unconscious and conscious mind and saved the day.

Happily, there are steps you can take to increase your ability to use your intuition. Let your internal compass help you. Some ways to learn to listen to your intuition include:  meditation; stream of conscious journal writing; listening to music and letting your mind go; and paying attention to yourself without criticizing or editing your thoughts.
