Wood, fire, earth, metal and water, the five Chinese zodiac elements

Chinese Zodiac Elements: What Type of Year Is It?

Quick answer: The Chinese zodiac elements are the five phases of Wǔxíng (五行): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each year takes its element from its Heavenly Stem, and you can find it from the last digit of the year: 0 or 1 is Metal, 2 or 3 is Water, 4 or 5 is Wood, 6 or 7 is Fire, and 8 or 9 is Earth. Even digits are yang years and odd digits are yin years. The Chinese year begins at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so January and early February birthdays may belong to the year before.

If you've heard someone say "I'm a Metal Rat," you've met the five elements. They sit right alongside the twelve animals in Chinese astrology. The animal tells you which year of the twelve you were born in. The element tells you what kind of year it was.

What Wǔxíng Means: Five Phases, Not Five Substances

Wǔxíng (五行) is usually translated as "five elements," but many scholars prefer "five phases." The word xíng (行) carries the sense of moving and proceeding. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water aren't building blocks of matter. They're stages of change, like a garden that sprouts in spring, blazes in summer, settles, is gathered in autumn and rests in winter.

The phases work with yin and yang (阴阳 yīnyáng), the two complementary sides of everything. Yang is outward, active and bright. Yin is inward, receptive and quiet. Neither is better, and each element has a yang form and a yin form.

How a Year Gets Its Element: The Heavenly Stems

The Chinese calendar counts years with Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. There are 10 stems and 12 branches. Each year pairs one stem with one branch, and because 10 and 12 only line back up every 60 years, the full cycle runs 60 years before it repeats.

The Earthly Branch gives the year its animal, the Shēngxiào (生肖) you probably know best. The Heavenly Stem gives the year its element and its yin or yang:

ElementYang stemYin stemYear ends in
Wood 木 (mù)甲 jiǎ乙 yǐ4 or 5
Fire 火 (huǒ)丙 bǐng丁 dīng6 or 7
Earth 土 (tǔ)戊 wù己 jǐ8 or 9
Metal 金 (jīn)庚 gēng辛 xīn0 or 1
Water 水 (shuǐ)壬 rén癸 guǐ2 or 3

Each element covers two years in a row, yang first, then yin. So 2026 is a yang Fire year (丙 bǐng) and 2027 is a yin Fire year (丁 dīng).

One important caution. The Chinese year starts at Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, which falls on a different date in late January or February. Born on January 10, 1967? That's before that year's Lunar New Year on February 9, so your year is 1966, the Fire Horse. Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the "eight characters" birth chart, use a different boundary, Lìchūn (立春), the solar start of spring around February 4.

The Five Element Years and What They Feel Like

Every element brings its own weather to a year. These are traditional associations, tendencies rather than fixed outcomes. Each also carries a classical season, direction and color.

Wood Years (木): Growth and New Starts

Spring, east, green. Wood is the energy of sprouting and reaching up. Wood years tend to favor fresh plans, learning and building with others. They can also feel restless, full of ideas and short on patience. Yang Wood (甲) is the tall tree, upright and steady. Yin Wood (乙) is the vine, flexible and good at finding a way around obstacles. The last Wood pair was 2024 and 2025, the Wood Dragon and Wood Snake.

Fire Years (火): Visibility and Momentum

Summer, south, red. Fire is the peak of the cycle: warmth, light and full expression. Fire years tend to feel fast and bright. Feelings run closer to the surface and what was hidden is more likely to come into view. It's a time for courage and connection, and for watching your temper and your energy. Yang Fire (丙) is the sun, shining on everyone at once. Yin Fire (丁) is the lamp flame, smaller and warmer, the light you gather around.

Earth Years (土): Stability and Taking Stock

The center, yellow, and late summer or the turns between seasons (traditions differ on Earth's season). Earth is the point of balance. Earth years tend to favor consolidating, caring for home and the people closest to you, and turning plans into something solid. Yang Earth (戊) is the mountain, broad and dependable. Yin Earth (己) is garden soil, soft and nurturing. The next Earth pair is 2028 and 2029, the Earth Monkey and Earth Rooster.

Metal Years (金): Clarity and Decisions

Autumn, west, white. Metal is the harvest, the energy of gathering in and cutting away what isn't needed. Metal years tend to bring structure, clear standards and decisive moves. The flip side is a certain hardness, so kindness goes a long way. Yang Metal (庚) is raw ore or a strong blade. Yin Metal (辛) is fine metal, like jewelry, refined and precise. The last Metal pair was 2020 and 2021, the Metal Rat and Metal Ox.

Water Years (水): Reflection and Flow

Winter, north, black. Water is the resting phase, energy gathered deep before it rises again. Water years tend to favor reflection, listening and quiet wisdom, and things that seemed stuck often find a way to move. Yang Water (壬) is the ocean or great river. Yin Water (癸) is rain and dew, gentle and nourishing. The last Water pair was 2022 and 2023, the Water Tiger and Water Rabbit.

How the Elements Work Together: The Two Cycles

The generating cycle (相生 xiāngshēng) is how each phase supports the next. Wood feeds Fire. Fire makes Earth, as ash returns to soil. Earth bears Metal, the ore inside the ground. Metal carries Water, as dew gathers on cool metal. Water nourishes Wood, and the circle begins again.

The controlling cycle (相克 xiāngkè) is how each phase keeps another in check. Wood controls Earth, as roots hold soil. Earth controls Water, as a bank holds a river. Water controls Fire. Fire controls Metal by melting it. Metal controls Wood, as an axe cuts timber.

Neither cycle is good or bad. Balance between them is the whole idea.

Fixed Element vs. Year Element

Each animal has its own fixed element, sometimes called its native element, that never changes. Each year also has a year element from its Heavenly Stem, and that one rotates.

Fixed elementAnimals
Wood 木Tiger 虎 hǔ, Rabbit 兔 tù
Fire 火Snake 蛇 shé, Horse 马 mǎ
Earth 土Ox 牛 niú, Dragon 龙 lóng, Goat 羊 yáng, Dog 狗 gǒu
Metal 金Monkey 猴 hóu, Rooster 鸡 jī
Water 水Rat 鼠 shǔ, Pig 猪 zhū

So the Horse is always a Fire animal at heart, but someone born in 1990 is a Metal Horse, because 1990 was a Metal year. The fixed element describes the animal's basic nature. The year element shades it, which is why two people of the same animal born 12 years apart can feel so different. Meet all twelve in our guide to the Chinese zodiac signs.

How to Find Your Own Element

Find your birth year below. If you were born in January or February, check the exact Lunar New Year date on your animal's page first, because you may belong to the year before.

Your year element is one piece of a bigger picture. In a full Bāzì chart, your birth month, day and hour each carry a stem and branch too, eight characters in all, weighed together. So "I'm a Water person" from your birth year alone is a starting point, not the whole story.

Two Fire Years in a Row: 2026 and 2027

2026 is the Fire Horse year, 丙午 (bǐngwǔ), running from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027. It's a yang Fire stem on the Horse, whose fixed element is also Fire. That doubled Fire is why so many people have felt this year as fast, bold and hard to slow down. More on our Year of the Horse page.

2027 is the Fire Goat year, 丁未 (dīngwèi), from February 6, 2027 to January 25, 2028. The character 羊 (yáng) covers goat, sheep and ram, so you'll see all three names. The Fire turns yin, more lamp than noonday sun. And the generating cycle shows up beautifully: the Goat's fixed element is Earth, and Fire makes Earth. Many people expect a warmer, more settled year after the Horse's rush. For what it may bring for every animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast, and our Year of the Goat page for the sign itself.

A note for men: the elements are a practical tool for reading a room. In a fast, outspoken Fire year, good timing and calm words solve problems before they flare.

Work with the year rather than against it. Plant something in a Wood year, show up in a Fire year, tend your foundations in an Earth year, decide what stays in a Metal year, and listen in a Water year. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the five elements of the Chinese zodiac?
They're Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水), together called Wǔxíng (五行). Many scholars translate Wǔxíng as "five phases," because the word describes stages of movement and change rather than physical substances. Each phase has a yang form and a yin form, which is how the calendar assigns them to years.

How do I find my Chinese zodiac element?
Look at the last digit of your birth year. 0 or 1 is Metal, 2 or 3 is Water, 4 or 5 is Wood, 6 or 7 is Fire, and 8 or 9 is Earth. If you were born in January or early February, check that year's Lunar New Year date first, because you may belong to the year before.

What element is 2026 in the Chinese zodiac?
2026 is a yang Fire year, the Fire Horse, written 丙午 (bǐngwǔ). It began on February 17, 2026 and ends on February 5, 2027. Because the Horse's own fixed element is also Fire, many people feel this year carries a double dose of Fire's speed, boldness and visibility.

What element is 2027 in the Chinese zodiac?
2027 is a yin Fire year, the Fire Goat, written 丁未 (dīngwèi). It begins on February 6, 2027 and runs to January 25, 2028. The character 羊 means goat, sheep or ram, so all three names are used. Our Chinese New Year 2027 page covers the forecast for every animal.

What is the difference between a fixed element and a year element?
Every animal has a fixed element that never changes, such as Fire for the Horse or Water for the Rat. Every year also has a rotating year element set by its Heavenly Stem. A person born in 1990 is a Metal Horse: Fire by the animal's nature, Metal by the year's stem.

Is one element better than another?
No. In Wǔxíng every phase has its place in the cycle, and each one supports one phase and restrains another. A Metal year isn't harsher than a Wood year in any final sense. It just carries a different kind of energy, and many people find it helps to work with that energy rather than fight it.
