Year of the Horse: Years, Traits and What the 2026 Fire Horse Year Brings

Quick answer: The Horse, 马 (mǎ), is the seventh of the twelve animals in Chinese astrology. Horse years include 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026, and the current Horse year runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027. Each Horse year also carries one of five elements, and 2026 is a Fire Horse year, 丙午 (bǐngwǔ), which comes around only once every 60 years.

We're living in a Horse year right now, and it's a special one: the Fire Horse. Here's what the tradition actually says. We'll look at where the Horse sits in Chinese astrology, her traditional nature, and the history behind the Fire Horse name.

Where the Horse Sits in the Shēngxiào (生肖)

The twelve animals are called the shēngxiào (生肖). Each one is tied to one of the twelve Earthly Branches, and the Horse's branch is 午 (wǔ), the seventh. She follows the Snake and comes before the Goat. The same branch marks the fifth month of the traditional calendar and the two hours around midday, 11 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon, when the sun is at its height.

According to legend, the order was set by a Great Race called by the Jade Emperor, 玉皇大帝 (Yùhuáng Dàdì). Versions differ, but in one popular telling the Horse was galloping toward the finish when the Snake, coiled around her hoof, slipped out and took sixth place. The Horse came in seventh.

The animal year starts at Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, between January 21 and February 20, not on January 1. See the full order in our Chinese zodiac signs guide.

Born in January or early February? Check your birth date against the Starts column. If you were born on February 20, 2014, you're a Wood Horse. If you were born on January 25, 2014, the Horse year hadn't started yet, so your animal is the Snake of 2013. Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the "eight characters" birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the Beginning of Spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead of Lunar New Year.

The Horse's Fixed Element and Yang Nature

Chinese astrology works with the Wǔxíng (五行), the five elements or five phases: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). The Horse carries two kinds of element. Our Chinese zodiac elements guide explains how they feed and balance each other.

Her fixed element, also called her native element, is Fire. It never changes, and it's why the tradition sees the Horse as warm, lively and quick to move.

Her year element changes. It comes from the Heavenly Stem of the year, part of the Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支) system of ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches. The stems and branches move forward together, which makes a cycle of 60 years. That's why a Fire Horse year like 1966 only returns in 2026.

The Horse is also a yang sign. Yin and yang (阴阳) alternate year by year, and the Horse's branch falls on a yang position, so every Horse year is a yang year. Yang is the active, outward, expanding side of the pair.

Horse Personality: Traditional Traits

These are traditional associations, not a fixed fate. Think of them as tendencies.

Strengths

The Horse is traditionally energetic, warm and independent. She's quick thinking, good with people and happiest when she's moving, whether that means travel, a new project or a lively conversation.

Challenges

Speed can turn into restlessness. The tradition describes the Horse as someone who may start more than she finishes, grow impatient with slow people or slow plans, and bolt when she feels fenced in. Her growth is learning to stay with something long enough to see it bloom.

In Love

In love, the Horse is passionate and openhearted. She wants a partner who can keep up and gives her room to be herself. She does best with honesty and space, not jealousy. We'll have Chinese compatibility guides for each animal soon.

At Work

At work, the Horse often shines in sales, travel, media, teaching, events or any role with variety and people contact. She's a strong starter and a persuasive speaker.

As a Friend

As a friend, the Horse is the one who says "let's go" and means it. For the men reading, a Horse colleague is often the person who gets a stalled team moving, so she's worth having on your side for a fresh start.

The Five Element Horses

The year element adds its own color to the Horse's Fire nature.

Wood Horse (1954, 2014): Friendly, curious and cooperative. In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Horse is said to have steady fuel for her enthusiasm.

Fire Horse (1966, 2026): The Horse in her own element, doubled. The Fire Horse is described as bold, magnetic and fiercely independent, with big energy and big feelings. She does best when that fire has a purpose.

Earth Horse (1978): Grounded and practical. Earth slows the Horse just enough to plan, so the Earth Horse tends to be the most patient and reliable of the Horses, while still loving change.

Metal Horse (1930, 1990): Determined, direct and hard working. Metal gives the Horse focus and strong opinions. She sets high goals and usually reaches them, though she can be stubborn about how.

Water Horse (1942, 2002): Adaptable, witty and quick to read a situation. Water cools the Horse's fire, so the Water Horse tends to be flexible and charming, though she may change direction often.

What Kind of Year Is a Horse Year?

When the Horse rules the year, the tradition describes the energy for everyone as fast, warm and outward. Horse years are often seen as good for travel, fresh starts, bold moves and speaking up. The lesson of a Horse year is to act with heart and still look before you leap.

The 2026 Fire Horse Year (丙午) as It Closes

The current year is 丙午 (bǐngwǔ), the Fire Horse. It began on February 17, 2026 and ends on February 5, 2027. The stem 丙 is yang Fire, and the Horse's own fixed element is Fire, so this year carries fire on fire. The tradition describes a year like this as bright, fast and intense, a year of strong feelings and big decisions.

As the year winds down, the tradition points to the other side of fire: warmth rather than burnout. These last months are a good time to finish what the year started, rest after a busy stretch, and notice what you truly want to carry forward. In the generating cycle, 相生 (xiāngshēng), Fire makes Earth, and the coming Goat year has an Earth nature, so the shift ahead is from motion toward settling.

If you'd like to look at how this Fire Horse year has touched your own chart and what you want to carry into the next one, a reader can talk that through with you personally.

The Fire Horse in History and Folklore

The Fire Horse's reputation comes mostly from Japan, and it's history worth telling carefully. It is folklore, not a prediction, and it says nothing about you or anyone born this year.

In Japan, the same 丙午 year is read as hinoeuma. During the Edo period, a belief grew that women born in a hinoeuma year would be too strong willed and hard on their husbands. The belief was tied in part to the story of Yaoya Oshichi, a young woman of Edo said to have been born in the 1666 Fire Horse year, whose story was retold in popular plays.

The belief had a real, measured effect. In 1966, the last Fire Horse year before this one, many couples in Japan chose not to have a child. The number of births that year fell by about a quarter compared with 1965, and the fertility rate dropped from roughly 2.1 to about 1.6 children per woman, according to World Bank figures. Births bounced back in 1967. A smaller dip was also recorded in the Fire Horse year of 1906.

A birth year doesn't decide who a woman becomes. In Chinese astrology, 丙午 is simply one of the sixty stem and branch pairs, a year of strong yang fire, with the same mix of gifts and growing edges as every other year.

Your Own Horse Year: Běnmìngnián (本命年)

When your own animal returns every twelve years, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年), your "root life year." For Horses, that's 2026, the year we're in now.

Tradition holds that in your own animal year you are said to offend Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the year, so it's seen as a year to move carefully. Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, often red socks, red underwear or a red string bracelet given by a parent or elder. It's a custom many households keep with real affection.

In our view, your Běnmìngnián is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. If you're a Horse, these last months of 2026 are a good time to slow your pace, tie up loose ends and make big changes with care rather than in a rush.

What Comes Next: The 2027 Fire Goat

Year of the Horse FAQ

What years are the Year of the Horse?
Horse years include 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026. Each one starts at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so the dates move every year. If your birthday falls in January or early February, check the start date in the table above to confirm whether you're a Horse or a Snake.

Is 2026 the Year of the Fire Horse?
Yes. The year 丙午 (bǐngwǔ) runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027. Its stem 丙 is yang Fire, and the Horse's fixed element is also Fire, so the year carries fire on fire. The stem and branch pair repeats every 60 years, and the last Fire Horse year was 1966.

Why do some people worry about Fire Horse years?
The worry comes mainly from a Japanese folk belief called hinoeuma, which held that women born in a Fire Horse year would be too strong willed. In 1966 it led many Japanese couples to avoid having a child, and births fell by about a quarter. It's folklore and history, not a prediction about anyone.

What element is the Horse?
The Horse has a fixed element of Fire that never changes. Each Horse year also has its own year element from the Heavenly Stem: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So a person born in 1990 is a Metal Horse with a Fire nature underneath. The year element adds color, and the fixed element stays at the core.

Is my own Horse year something to worry about?
Tradition sees your Běnmìngnián as a year to move carefully, because you're said to offend Tài Suì. Many people wear red as a protective custom, often a gift from a parent or elder. We see it as a thoughtful, grounded season rather than something to fear, a good year for reflection and steady choices.

Are the Horse traits true for everyone born in a Horse year?
No. The traits are traditional associations and tendencies, not a fixed fate. Your year animal is only one part of a Chinese astrology chart. Your month, day and hour also matter in a full Bāzì reading, along with your own choices and life experience. Many Horses will recognize themselves, and some won't.

Whatever your animal, our experienced psychic readers offer a private, unhurried place to talk, and The Psychic Line is a completely independent psychic service.
