Year of the Goat or Sheep: Years, Traits and What the Goat Year Brings
Quick answer: The Goat, 羊 (yáng), is the eighth of the twelve animals in Chinese astrology, and the same word covers the goat, the sheep and the ram. Recent Goat years are 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015, and the next one begins February 6, 2027. Each Goat year also carries one of five elements, so a 1967 Goat is a Fire Goat and a 1979 Goat is an Earth Goat.
If you were born in a Goat year, you may have seen yourself called a Sheep in one place and a Goat in another. Here's the honest answer: both are right. Let's look at where the Goat sits in Chinese astrology, what the tradition says about her nature, and what her years tend to feel like.
Goat, Sheep or Ram? What 羊 Really Means
In Chinese, 羊 (yáng) is one word for a whole group of horned grazing animals. It covers the goat, the sheep and the ram. When you need to be specific in everyday Chinese, you add a word in front: 山羊 (shānyáng, "mountain yáng") is a goat, and 绵羊 (miányáng, "soft yáng") is a sheep. The zodiac sign itself just says 羊.
So "Year of the Goat," "Year of the Sheep" and "Year of the Ram" all point to the same sign. We say Goat for short, but please read it as the whole 羊: the climber, the flock animal and the ram together.
Where the Goat Sits in the Shēngxiào (生肖)
The twelve animals are called the shēngxiào (生肖), and each one is tied to one of the twelve Earthly Branches. The Goat's branch is 未 (wèi), the eighth branch. It follows the Horse and comes before the Monkey. The same branch also marks the sixth month of the traditional calendar and the two hours from 1 to 3 in the afternoon, a slow, warm stretch of the day.
According to legend, the order of the animals was set by the Great Race called by the Jade Emperor, 玉皇大帝 (Yùhuáng Dàdì). Versions differ, but in one popular telling the Goat crossed the river with the Monkey and the Rooster, the three of them working a raft through the weeds together. It suits a sign known for cooperation.
The animal year starts at Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, between January 21 and February 20, not on January 1. See the full twelve animal order in our Chinese zodiac signs guide.

Born in January or early February? Check your exact birth date against the Starts column. If you were born on February 10, 1967, you're a Fire Goat. If you were born on February 5, 1967, the Goat year hadn't begun yet, so your animal is the Horse of 1966. One more note: practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the "eight characters" birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the Beginning of Spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead of Lunar New Year. That can change the answer for a few early February birthdays.
The Goat's Fixed Element and Yin Nature
Chinese astrology works with the Wǔxíng (五行), the five elements or five phases: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). The Goat holds two kinds of element at once, and it helps to keep them apart. Our Chinese zodiac elements guide explains how the five phases feed and balance each other.
Her fixed element, sometimes called her native element, is Earth. That never changes. It's why the tradition sees the Goat as steady, nurturing and tied to home and comfort, the warm earth of late summer.
Her year element changes. It comes from the Heavenly Stem of the year, part of the Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支) system of ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches. Ten stems paired with twelve branches make a cycle of 60 years, so a Water Goat year like 1943 only comes back as 2003.
The Goat is also a yin sign. Yin and yang (阴阳) alternate year by year, and because the Goat's branch is yin, every Goat year is a yin year. Yin is the receptive, inward, gathering side of the pair. It isn't weaker. It's the quiet strength that holds things together.
Goat Personality: Traditional Traits
These are traditional associations, not a fixed fate. Think of them as tendencies.
Strengths
The Goat is traditionally gentle, kind and artistic. She has an eye for beauty and a gift for making a room feel calm. She tends to be patient, loyal and quietly perceptive, noticing how people feel before they say a word. Many Goats are drawn to music, design, cooking or gardening.
Challenges
That same sensitivity can tip into worry. The tradition describes the Goat as someone who may second guess herself, put off hard choices, or lean on others for reassurance. The growth for a Goat is trusting her own judgment and saying what she needs out loud.
In Love
In love, the Goat is traditionally devoted and romantic. She wants security, tenderness and a partner who notices the small things. Her best relationships tend to be ones where she feels safe enough to be honest about what hurts. We'll have Chinese compatibility guides for each animal soon.
At Work
At work, the Goat often shines in roles that reward care, creativity and steady effort rather than cutthroat competition. She can be a wonderful teacher, designer, counselor, nurse or team builder.
As a Friend
As a friend, the Goat is the one who remembers your birthday and shows up with soup. She's a good listener and rarely judges. For the men reading, a Goat friend or colleague is often the person who reads the mood of a group fastest, which makes her a smart one to ask before a tough conversation.
The Five Element Goats
The year element adds its own color to the Goat's Earth nature.
Wood Goat (1955, 2015): Warm, generous and growth minded. The Wood Goat tends to be the most outwardly sociable of the Goats, quick to help and happiest when she's building something with others.
Fire Goat (1967, 2027): Expressive, brave and creative. Fire brings the Goat out of her shell, so the Fire Goat often has a flair for performance or leadership in creative work. Her feelings run strong, and she does best with an outlet for them.
Earth Goat (1979): The Goat doubled in her own element. The Earth Goat is steady, practical and devoted to home and the people she loves. She tends to be the most patient and dependable of the Goats, though she can resist change.
Metal Goat (1931, 1991): Refined, determined and a little more guarded. Metal gives the Goat firmer edges and higher standards, so she often has a strong sense of style and a clear idea of what she wants. She may keep her soft side for a trusted few.
Water Goat (1943, 2003): Intuitive, adaptable and deeply empathetic. The Water Goat reads people well and goes with the current rather than against it. She's often a natural peacemaker, and she does well to set boundaries so she isn't carrying everyone else's moods.
What Kind of Year Is a Goat Year?
When the Goat rules the year, the tradition describes the energy for everyone as softer and more collaborative. Goat years are often seen as a good time to slow down, repair relationships, tend your home and invest in creative work. Teamwork tends to do better than solo power plays.
Because the Goat is a yin sign, these years can also feel more inward. It's a year to ask, "Where do I feel at home, and who makes me feel safe?"
Each Goat year also carries its element, which shifts the tone. Through the generating cycle, 相生 (xiāngshēng), Fire makes Earth, so a Fire Goat year is said to feed the Goat's own Earth nature, a supportive pairing for creative and heartfelt work.
If you'd like to understand how a Goat year touches your own chart, not just the general mood, that's something a reader can look at with you personally.

Your Own Goat Year: Běnmìngnián (本命年)
When your own animal returns every twelve years, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年), your "root life year." For Goats, the next one is 2027.
Tradition holds that in your own animal year you are said to offend Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the year, so it's seen as a year to move carefully. Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, often red socks, red underwear or a red string bracelet given by a parent or elder. It's a custom many households keep with real affection, and it's often more about love and care than worry.
In our view, your Běnmìngnián is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. Check in with yourself, finish what's half done, and make big changes with care rather than in a rush. It's simply a year that asks you to pay attention.
The Next Goat Year: 2027, the Fire Goat (丁未)
The next Year of the Goat is a Fire Goat year, 丁未 (dīngwèi). It begins on February 6, 2027 and ends on January 25, 2028. The stem 丁 is yin Fire, and the branch 未 is the Goat.
We've written a full forecast for every animal in our Chinese New Year 2027 guide, so head there for what the Fire Goat year may hold for you and the people you love.

Year of the Goat FAQ
Is it the Year of the Goat or the Year of the Sheep?
Both are right. The Chinese character 羊 (yáng) covers the goat, the sheep and the ram, and the zodiac sign doesn't choose between them. English speakers use Goat, Sheep and Ram for the same sign. Chinese adds a word in front when it needs to be specific, such as 山羊 for goat and 绵羊 for sheep, but the zodiac simply says 羊.
What years are the Year of the Goat?
Goat years include 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027. Each one starts at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so the exact dates move every year. If your birthday falls in January or early February, check the start date in the table above to confirm whether you're a Goat or a Horse.
What element is the Goat?
The Goat has a fixed element of Earth that never changes. Each Goat year also has its own year element from the Heavenly Stem: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So a person born in 1967 is a Fire Goat with an Earth nature underneath. The year element adds color, and the fixed element stays at the core.
When is the next Year of the Goat?
The next Year of the Goat is the Fire Goat year, 丁未, running from February 6, 2027 to January 25, 2028. It's the first Fire Goat year since 1967. For the full 2027 forecast for every animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 guide, which looks at what the year may bring sign by sign.
Is my own Goat year something to worry about?
Tradition sees your Běnmìngnián as a year to move carefully, because you're said to offend Tài Suì. Many people wear red as a protective custom, often a gift from a parent or elder. We see it as a thoughtful, grounded season rather than something to fear. It's a good year for reflection, care and steady choices.
Are the Goat traits true for everyone born in a Goat year?
No. The traits are traditional associations and tendencies, not a fixed fate. In Chinese astrology your year animal is only one part of your chart. Your month, day and hour also matter in a full Bāzì reading, along with your own choices and life experience. Many Goats will recognize themselves, and some won't.
Whatever your animal, our experienced psychic readers offer a private, unhurried place to talk, and The Psychic Line is a completely independent psychic service.
