They are happening to all of us at once, they change on a schedule you can look up, and they are much easier to observe than anything in a birth chart.

Dates move by a day either way from year to year. Here are the exact times for the current cycle, in Eastern time.

Each season ends the moment the next begins. Virgo season closes on September 23, 2027, when Libra season opens again and the wheel starts over.

What a Zodiac Season Actually Is

From where we stand on Earth, the Sun appears to travel the same path through the sky every year. That path gets divided into twelve equal slices of thirty degrees each, and each slice is a sign. When the Sun is crossing one of them, that is that sign's season.

This is also where sun signs come from. Saying you are a Leo means you were born while the Sun was crossing Leo. Your birthday and Leo season are the same stretch of the calendar.

The piece people miss is that the season belongs to everyone. The Sun is in Leo for all of us in late July. Your own chart decides which corner of your life gets lit up, not whether the light is on. That is the short version of why zodiac seasons change our energy.

Why the Year Starts in March

The astrological year opens with Aries season at the spring equinox. Not January, not Capricorn.

Where the Twelve Signs Came From

This system is roughly four thousand years old. Babylonian astronomers divided the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal parts, one for each lunar cycle in a year, and named them after nearby constellations. The Greeks inherited it, Ptolemy wrote it down in the second century, and the framework has been in continuous use ever since.

Here is the part that trips people up. Western astrology anchors the twelve signs to the equinox, not to the stars. Aries season begins at the spring equinox by definition, wherever the constellations happen to sit.

Meanwhile the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, about one degree every seventy two years. Over two thousand years that adds up to roughly a full sign of drift. So the constellation Aries is no longer sitting behind the Sun during Aries season, and it has not been for a long time.

That is the real answer to the headline that resurfaces every few years claiming the zodiac signs changed or that a thirteenth sign was discovered. Ophiuchus is a real constellation the Sun does pass through. It was never one of the twelve signs, because the twelve were never constellations in the first place. They are twelve equal divisions of a year, measured from the equinox. Nothing changed, and your sign is still your sign.

The Twelve Zodiac Seasons

Aries Season

Late March to late April. Fire, cardinal, ruled by Mars.

The astrological new year, and the most impatient month of the cycle. Aries season shows up as physical restlessness and a sudden intolerance for anything slow. People quit things in April. People also start things they have been circling for years, often on about four minutes of deliberation.

Taurus Season

Late April to late May. Earth, fixed, ruled by Venus.

The brakes go on, in the best way. Taurus season is the month the body wants good food, decent sleep, and to be outside. Money and comfort come into focus. Progress gets slower and considerably more durable.

Gemini Season

Late May to late June. Air, mutable, ruled by Mercury.

The calendar fills up on its own. Gemini season is curiosity, conversation, and about nine open tabs in your head at any moment. It is the most social stretch of the year and the hardest one to concentrate in.

Cancer Season

Late June to late July. Water, cardinal, ruled by the Moon.

Everything gets closer to the surface. Cancer season pulls attention toward home, family, and the people who actually know you. Old memories arrive unannounced. Nostalgia has a season and this is it.

Leo Season

Late July to late August. Fire, fixed, ruled by the Sun.

Confidence comes back, and so does the willingness to be looked at. Leo season is generous and a little theatrical. It is the month people post the photo, take the stage, say the bold thing out loud.

The cleanup month. Virgo season is when people reorganize the kitchen, fix their sleep, and finally deal with the thing that has been half broken since June. Small improvements, compounding fast.

Libra Season

Late September to late October. Air, cardinal, ruled by Venus.

Opens on the autumn equinox, when day and night are almost exactly equal. Fitting, because Libra season is about balance and where yours has quietly tipped. Who reaches out first. Who apologizes. Who adjusts. Decisions get harder before they get clearer, because suddenly you can see every side.

Scorpio Season

Late October to late November. Water, fixed, ruled by Mars and Pluto.

The deepest month of the wheel. Small talk stops working around the third week of October and does not start working again until December. Conversations you have been avoiding become unavoidable. Something usually ends, and the ending usually turns out to be a relief.

Work and reputation move to the front of your attention whether you invited them or not, and effort starts feeling worth it again, which is not the same as feeling easy.

The Season You Dread Is Usually the One Opposite Yours

Ask people which month of the year they find hardest and you get a pattern. It is very often the season sitting directly across the wheel from their own sign.

Every sign has an opposite, six months away:

• Aries and Libra. Myself against ourselves.
• Taurus and Scorpio. What I hold against what I have to let go.

The week or two just before your birthday is a different animal. What Is Happening in the Current Cycle

A few things worth marking on the calendar this time around.

• Libra and Scorpio seasons 2026 carry a Venus retrograde, running October 3 to November 13. Venus turns backward once every eighteen months, so this is not a routine one, and it lands right across the two seasons most concerned with relationships.
• Scorpio season 2026 also holds a Mercury retrograde, October 24 to November 13. Both planets turn direct on the same day, which is unusual and makes November 13 the turning point of the autumn.
• Sagittarius season 2026 ends with three slow planets changing direction inside three days. Saturn turns direct December 10, then Neptune turns direct and Jupiter turns retrograde on December 12.
• Capricorn season runs into a Mars retrograde beginning January 10, 2027, the first in two years. It arrives right in the middle of new year momentum, which makes the window from December 21 to January 9 the strong one for starting things.
