What the Houses Are

Picture your birth chart as a wheel. The signs are the twelve slices painted around the rim, the same for everyone, always in the same order. The houses are a second set of twelve slices laid on top, and this set turns with the Earth. Because the Earth spins once a day, the houses rotate all the way around the chart every 24 hours, which is why your birth time matters so much: two babies born in the same city on the same day, twelve hours apart, have the same planet signs and completely different houses.

The 1st house begins at the exact point that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. That point is your rising sign, or ascendant, and everything else follows from it. The 10th house begins at the Midheaven, the highest point the sky reached, and the 4th and 7th houses sit opposite them. Those four are the angular houses, and they carry the most weight.

Every planet in your chart falls into one house, and that house tells you where the planet's energy goes. Your sun, moon, and rising signs tell you who you are; the houses tell you where that shows up: in your money, your marriage, your work, your friendships, or your private world.

How to Find Your Houses

You need three things: your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birthplace. The time is the piece most people are missing, and it is worth finding. A birth certificate, hospital record, or baby book usually has it, and a phone call to a relative often settles it. Even a time that is right to within half an hour puts most planets in the correct houses.

How to Read a House

Start with three questions for any house. First, which sign is on its cusp? That sign colors the whole house: a Capricorn 7th house approaches partnership cautiously; a Leo 7th house wants romance with a capital R. Second, which planets are inside it? A house with three planets is a major theme of your life, whether you asked for it or not. Third, where is the planet that rules the cusp sign? That planet links the house to another part of your chart and shows what it depends on.

The four angular houses, the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th, are the loudest. Planets there are visible in your personality, your home, your relationships, and your career. The succedent houses, the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th, are about what you build and hold on to: money, creations, intimacy, and friendships. The cadent houses, the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th, are about how you think, work, believe, and process, and they tend to work behind the scenes.

Empty Houses and Crowded Houses

There are ten planets and twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses, and nothing is wrong with yours. An empty house is an area of life that runs smoothly on its own or that simply is not where your story concentrates. Read it by the sign on its cusp and by the planet ruling that sign.

A crowded house, three or more planets, is the opposite. Astrologers call it a stellium, and it marks the part of life that keeps coming up: the person whose 10th house is full will build their identity around work; the person with a full 4th house will build it around home.
