Chinese Astrology: The Twelve Animals, Five Elements and the Cycle Behind Them

Quick answer: Chinese astrology is a system rooted in the traditional Chinese calendar that reads character and timing through twelve animals, five elements and the balance of yin and yang. Your animal comes from your birth year, counted from Lunar New Year rather than January 1. Each year also carries an element, so 2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 is a Fire Goat year. Deeper practice, called Bāzì, looks at your year, month, day and hour of birth together.

Maybe you've heard someone say "I'm a Dragon" and wondered what they meant, or why the animal changes every Lunar New Year. Chinese astrology isn't hard to follow once you see how its pieces fit together. Let's walk through it on its own terms.

What Is Chinese Astrology?

Chinese astrology is a way of reading time. It grew out of the traditional Chinese calendar, Chinese philosophy and centuries of observation. At its heart is Shēngxiào (生肖), the cycle of twelve animals, often called the Chinese zodiac. Each animal is tied to one of the twelve Earthly Branches, and each year carries one of the five elements and a yin or yang quality.

It's built on cycles: the moon, the seasons, and a great 60 year cycle that has been counted in China for more than two thousand years.

The Twelve Animals of Shēngxiào, in Order

The animals always appear in the same order. Each has a fixed, or native, element and a yin or yang nature that never changes. That's different from the element of a given year.

OrderAnimalCharacter and pinyinEarthly BranchFixed elementYin or yang
1Rat鼠 shǔ子 zǐWater 水Yang
2Ox牛 niú丑 chǒuEarth 土Yin
3Tiger虎 hǔ寅 yínWood 木Yang
4Rabbit兔 tù卯 mǎoWood 木Yin
5Dragon龙 lóng辰 chénEarth 土Yang
6Snake蛇 shé巳 sìFire 火Yin
7Horse马 mǎ午 wǔFire 火Yang
8Goat羊 yáng未 wèiEarth 土Yin
9Monkey猴 hóu申 shēnMetal 金Yang
10Rooster鸡 jī酉 yǒuMetal 金Yin
11Dog狗 gǒu戌 xūEarth 土Yang
12Pig猪 zhū亥 hàiWater 水Yin

One note on the eighth animal: 羊 yáng covers goat, sheep and ram. On its own, the character covers all three, and the zodiac doesn't choose among them, so you'll see all three in English. They're the same sign.

Each animal carries traditional associations. Think of them as tendencies, never a fixed fate:

  • Rat: quick, resourceful, good at spotting opportunity.
  • Ox: steady, patient, quietly dependable.
  • Tiger: brave, protective, drawn to a challenge.
  • Rabbit: gentle, tactful, with a strong sense of beauty.
  • Dragon: confident, ambitious, full of presence.
  • Snake: thoughtful, perceptive, private.
  • Horse: lively, independent, always moving.
  • Goat: kind, artistic, deeply caring.
  • Monkey: clever, curious, inventive.
  • Rooster: observant, honest, hardworking.
  • Dog: loyal, fair, protective of the people they love.
  • Pig: generous, warm, easy to be around.

How the System Works

The lunar calendar and Lunar New Year

Chinese astrology follows the traditional lunisolar calendar, 农历 (nónglì). Its year begins at Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival, which most people in the US know as Lunar New Year. It lands on a new moon between January 21 and February 20, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice.

So if you were born in January or early February, check the exact date. The Wood Snake year ran from January 29, 2025 to February 16, 2026, so a baby born on February 10, 2026 is a Snake, not a Horse.

One wrinkle: Bāzì practitioners (more below) usually start the year at Lìchūn (立春), the start of spring, around February 4. Both approaches are respected.

The 60 year cycle: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

Every year has a two character name made from Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Pair 10 stems with 12 branches in order and you get 60 combinations before the pattern repeats. The branch gives the year its animal. The stem gives the year its element, with each element holding two stems in a row, one yang and one yin:

  • Wood: 甲 jiǎ (yang), 乙 yǐ (yin)
  • Fire: 丙 bǐng (yang), 丁 dīng (yin)
  • Earth: 戊 wù (yang), 己 jǐ (yin)
  • Metal: 庚 gēng (yang), 辛 xīn (yin)
  • Water: 壬 rén (yang), 癸 guǐ (yin)

So 2026 is 丙午 (bǐngwǔ): the Fire stem 丙 with the Horse branch 午. A handy shortcut: years ending in 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 Fire, 8 or 9 Earth, 0 or 1 Metal, and 2 or 3 Water.

The current 60 year cycle began with the Wood Rat year, 甲子 (jiǎzǐ), in 1984. The one before it began in 1924. Because the same animal and element only meet once every 60 years, a Fire Horse born in 2026 shares that exact pairing with people born in 1966.

Wǔxíng: the five elements

Wǔxíng (五行) means five elements or, more closely, five phases: kinds of energy that change into one another. They are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水).

The elements relate in two main cycles. In the generating cycle, 相生 (xiāngshēng), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, 相克 (xiāngkè), Wood parts Earth, Earth contains Water, Water calms Fire, Fire shapes Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. Together they keep things in balance.

Our full guide to the Chinese zodiac elements goes deeper into each one.

Yin and yang

Yin and yang (阴阳 yīnyáng) describe two qualities that need each other. Yang leans active, outward and bright. Yin leans receptive, inward and quiet. The animals alternate, starting with yang Rat, and so do the years: 2026 is a yang Fire year and 2027 is a yin Fire year.

Where Chinese Astrology Comes From

The paired stems and branches already appear on Shang dynasty oracle bones, where they were used to record days. Using the same 60 combinations to count years came much later, from around the 3rd century BCE, and it became standard practice under the Western Han.

The animals came into the picture over time. Qin dynasty bamboo texts excavated in 1975 at Shuìhǔdì (睡虎地) in Hubei, from a tomb dated to the 3rd century BCE, include a daybook (日书 rìshū) that links animals to the Earthly Branches. The list varied by region before it was standardized. By the Eastern Han, the scholar Wáng Chōng (王充) recorded the same twelve animals we use now in his Lùnhéng (论衡), written in the 1st century CE.

The Great Race, according to legend

According to legend, and it's told in many versions, the Jade Emperor, Yùhuáng Dàdì (玉皇大帝), called the animals to a race across a river and named the years in the order they arrived. The clever Rat rode on the Ox's back and hopped off at the finish to take first place, with the Ox close behind. In many tellings, the Cat never made it, which is why there's no Cat in the Chinese list.

Beyond Your Year Animal: Bāzì, the Four Pillars

The deeper practice beyond your year animal is Bāzì (八字), which means "eight characters." It's also called the Four Pillars, 四柱 (sìzhù).

Bāzì looks at four moments: the year, month, day and hour you were born. Each one is written as a stem and branch pair, giving eight characters in all. The stem of your day pillar, often called the Day Master (日主 rìzhǔ), represents you, and the rest of the chart is read in relation to it. Because the months follow the solar terms, Bāzì uses Lìchūn as its year boundary. The four pillar form is commonly credited to the Song dynasty scholar Xú Zǐpíng (徐子平). It's why two people with the same animal can feel so different.

Regional Variations: The Cat in Vietnam

Some places made the cycle their own. In Vietnam, the fourth animal is the Cat in place of the Rabbit, and the second is often the Water Buffalo rather than the Ox. It's a living tradition of its own.

Běnmìngnián: When Your Own Animal Year Returns

Every twelve years, your animal comes back around. That year is called Běnmìngnián (本命年). Traditionally it's seen as a year to move carefully, because you're said to offend Tài Suì (太岁), the deity tied to that year, a belief known as 犯太岁 (fàn tàisuì). Many people wear red during it, often red underwear, red socks or a red string, usually given by a loved one. It's a custom many families keep with real affection.

We see it as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. It's a good year to check in with yourself and make choices with care, not a year to fear.

Chinese Astrology and Western Astrology

They're separate traditions with different foundations, and neither is a translation of the other. If you're curious about both, our page on Chinese zodiac and Western astrology looks at them side by side as equals. Compatibility guides for the Chinese animals are on the way too.

The Current Year and the Next

We're now in the Fire Horse year, 丙午 (bǐngwǔ), which began February 17, 2026 and runs until February 5, 2027. Yang Fire meets an animal whose native element is also Fire, so it's a year of warmth and momentum.

Next comes the Fire Goat year, 丁未 (dīngwèi), starting February 6, 2027 and running until January 25, 2028. The Fire stays, but it turns yin: softer, steadier and more inward. For what it may bring each animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast.

A note for men: many find the animals a useful lens for social intelligence, noticing how a steady Ox and a fast moving Monkey might handle the same problem differently, then adjusting how you work with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chinese astrology?
Chinese astrology is a system rooted in the traditional Chinese calendar. It reads character and timing through twelve animals called Shēngxiào, the five elements of Wǔxíng, and the balance of yin and yang. Each year has an animal, an element and a yin or yang quality. The deeper practice, Bāzì, reads the year, month, day and hour of birth together.

Why doesn't my Chinese zodiac year start on January 1?
The animal year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls on a new moon between January 21 and February 20. If your birthday is in January or early February, you may belong to the previous animal. For example, someone born February 10, 2026 is a Snake, because the Horse year began February 17, 2026.

What is the difference between my animal's fixed element and my year element?
Every animal has a fixed, or native, element that never changes. The Horse's is Fire, and the Rat's is Water. Your year element comes from the Heavenly Stem of your birth year and rotates through all five. So a Horse born in 1990 is a Metal Horse, while its fixed element is still Fire.

What is Běnmìngnián?
Běnmìngnián is the return of your own animal year, which happens every twelve years. By tradition, you're said to offend Tài Suì that year, so many people wear red as a protective custom, often a gift from a loved one. We see it as a season for care, reflection and steady choices rather than worry.

What Chinese zodiac year is 2027?
2027 is the year of the Fire Goat, 丁未 (dīngwèi). It begins at Lunar New Year on February 6, 2027 and runs until January 25, 2028. It follows the 2026 Fire Horse year, which runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027. Both years carry Fire, first yang and then yin.
