Year of the Dog: Years, Traits and What the Dog Year Brings

Quick answer: The Dog (狗 gǒu) is the eleventh of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, and in Chinese tradition it stands for loyalty, honesty, fairness and protection. Dog years include 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and 2018, and the next one begins on February 3, 2030. Each Dog year starts at Lunar New Year rather than January 1 and carries one of five elements, so 1994 was a Wood Dog and 2018 an Earth Dog.

If you were born in a Dog year, you belong to the sign most admired for its heart. The Dog is known as faithful, honest and protective of the people it loves, the friend who tells you the truth and stands by you anyway.

The Dog in Chinese Astrology

The Chinese zodiac is called Shēngxiào (生肖). It follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar, not the Western calendar, and it's built on the older system of Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

Each animal matches one of the twelve Earthly Branches. The Dog belongs to the eleventh branch, 戌 (xū). That branch also names a double hour of the traditional day, 7 to 9 p.m., the hour of the Dog, as evening settles in and the household closes up for the night.

The Dog comes after the Rooster and just before the Pig, which closes the cycle. You can see all twelve together in our guide to the Chinese zodiac signs.

Why the Dog Came Eleventh: The Great Race

According to legend, the Jade Emperor, Yùhuáng Dàdì (玉皇大帝), called the animals to a race across a wide river, and the order they finished would set the order of the years. The Dog was one of the best swimmers and runners of all. So why did it finish eleventh?

In many tellings, the water was so clear and inviting that the Dog stopped to splash and bathe, and by the time it climbed out, ten animals were already ahead. The Jade Emperor still welcomed it into the twelve.

It's a folk tale with many versions, not history. It's also a gentle reminder that the Dog is more than duty. It knows how to enjoy life, too.

Born in January or early February? Check the dates carefully. The animal year begins at Lunar New Year, Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival, which falls between January 21 and February 20. Someone born on February 1, 2019 is still a Dog, because the 2018 Dog year ran until February 4, 2019. Someone born on February 10, 1958 is not a Dog, because the 1958 Dog year didn't begin until February 18.

Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the Four Pillars birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the start of spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead. If your birthday falls near either date, it may be placed differently.

Dog Personality: Traditional Traits

These are traditional associations. They describe tendencies, not fate. Your full chart, your life story and your own choices shape who you are far more than any one sign.

Strengths

The Dog is loyal, honest and fair minded. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and will speak up for someone who's being treated badly. She's dependable, hardworking and generous with her time, and the people in her life know she'll show up when it counts.

Challenges

Because she cares so much, the Dog can worry. She may expect the worst before it happens, feel let down when others don't share her standards, or take on other people's problems as her own. Her growth often comes from trusting that she doesn't have to guard everything all the time.

In Love

In love, the Dog is faithful, sincere and deeply devoted. She wants honesty above all, and once she trusts someone, she gives her whole heart. She may take time to open up, and she needs a partner who's as steady and true as she is. Our Chinese zodiac compatibility guides are coming soon.

At Work

At work, the Dog thrives where integrity and service matter: teaching, nursing, social work, law, public service, human resources, nonprofit work, any role where she's protecting or helping people. She's the colleague everyone trusts. For men born in Dog years, the same gifts often show up as principled leadership and strong social intelligence, the ability to read who's reliable and to build loyal teams.

As a Friend

As a friend, the Dog is the one who's been there for years. She keeps her promises, tells you the truth kindly, and would drive across town at midnight if you needed her.

The Dog's Fixed Element and Yin Yang Nature

Each animal has a fixed, or native, element that never changes. The Dog's fixed element is Earth (土). Earth brings stability, reliability and a steady center, which fits the Dog's dependable nature.

This is different from the year element, which changes with each Dog year. The five elements, called Wǔxíng (五行), are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). They're also called the five phases, because each one turns into the next.

In yin and yang (阴阳), the Dog is a yang animal, and every Dog year is a yang year. The 60 year cycle pairs the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches. The stem gives the year its element, and yin and yang alternate year by year. Because the Dog's branch is yang, it only pairs with the five yang stems, giving five kinds of Dog. Our guide to the Chinese zodiac elements explains the whole cycle.

The Five Element Dogs

The elements relate through two cycles. In the generating cycle, xiāngshēng (相生), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, xiāngkè (相克), each element keeps another in check. Here's how each year element meets the Dog's native Earth.

Wood Dog (1934, 1994)

Wood holds Earth in check, the way roots hold soil. The Wood Dog tends to be warm, cooperative and open minded, more flexible than other Dogs and good at bringing people together.

Fire Dog (1946, 2006)

Fire makes Earth, so the year element feeds the Dog's own. The Fire Dog is often passionate, brave and outspoken, with a strong drive to stand up for what's right.

Earth Dog (1958, 2018)

Year element and fixed element match, so this is the Dog at her steadiest. The Earth Dog tends to be practical, patient and deeply reliable, a calm presence others lean on.

Metal Dog (1970)

Earth bears Metal, so this Dog's loyalty turns firm and determined. The Metal Dog is often principled, focused and protective, with strong convictions and real staying power.

Water Dog (1982)

Earth holds Water in its banks. The Water Dog tends to be intuitive, gentle and perceptive, a good listener who senses what others need.

What Kind of Year Is a Dog Year?

A Dog year brings an honest, steady energy for everyone, not just people born under it. Traditionally it's seen as a season for loyalty, fairness and doing the right thing. It's a good year to strengthen the relationships that matter, keep your promises, stand up for your values, and put time into your home and community.

Dog energy rewards sincerity. Straight talk and real commitment tend to carry further than clever shortcuts.

The flavor changes with the element. An Earth Dog year like 2018 leaned toward stability and responsibility. The coming Metal Dog year, which begins on February 3, 2030, leans toward conviction and focus. This describes a season, not a sentence. You stay in charge of what you do with it.

If you'd like to look at how a Dog year, or any year, touches your own life, a reading can look at your personal chart and situation, not just your animal.

Your Own Dog Year: Běnmìngnián

When your animal returns in the twelve year cycle, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年). In Chinese tradition, your own animal year is said to put you at odds with Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the current year, so it's traditionally treated as a year to take extra care.

Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, such as red socks, red underwear or a red string bracelet, often given by a parent or relative. It's a practice many families keep, a way of looking after the people they love.

In our view, your Dog year is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. The Dog spends so much energy watching over others that this is a good time to turn some of that care toward yourself, look after your closest bonds and make big choices calmly.

The Most Recent Dog Year and the Next One

The most recent Dog year was the Earth Dog year, 戊戌 (wùxū), which ran from February 16, 2018 to February 4, 2019. The next Dog year is the Metal Dog, 庚戌 (gēngxū), which begins on February 3, 2030 and runs to January 22, 2031.

Before that comes the 2027 Fire Goat year. For what it holds for Dogs and every other animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast.
