Year of the Dragon: Years, Traits and What the Dragon Year Brings
Quick answer: The Dragon (龙 lóng) is the fifth of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac and the only one that is a legendary creature. In Chinese tradition it stands for strength, good fortune, vitality and the life giving power of rain. Dragon years include 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024, each beginning at Lunar New Year rather than January 1. Every Dragon year also carries one of five elements, so 1988 was an Earth Dragon and 2024 a Wood Dragon.
If you were born in a Dragon year, you were born under one of the most celebrated signs of the twelve. The Dragon is admired for confidence, energy and presence, and its year is a time many families have long welcomed.

The Lóng in Chinese Culture
The Chinese dragon, lóng (龙), is its own creature with its own meaning, and it's worth meeting on its own terms. It has a long, winding body with scales, four clawed legs, whiskers and antlers. It doesn't need wings to fly. It's usually shown among clouds or water, often chasing a shining pearl.
Above all, the lóng is a benevolent power tied to water. In Chinese belief, dragons were linked with rivers, seas and the rain that farming depends on, and the Dragon Kings, Lóngwáng (龙王), were honored as rulers of the waters. For centuries the dragon was also the emblem of the emperor. Today you'll see dragons dance through the streets during the Spring Festival, and dragon boats race during the Dragon Boat Festival, Duānwǔjié (端午节).
The Dragon in Chinese Astrology
The Chinese zodiac is called Shēngxiào (生肖). It follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar, not the Western calendar, and it's built on the older system of Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.
Each animal matches one of the twelve Earthly Branches. The Dragon belongs to the fifth branch, 辰 (chén). That branch also names a double hour of the traditional day, 7 to 9 a.m., the hour of the Dragon.
The Dragon sits between the Rabbit and the Snake. You can see all twelve together in our guide to the Chinese zodiac signs.
Why the Dragon Came Fifth: The Great Race
According to legend, the Jade Emperor, Yùhuáng Dàdì (玉皇大帝), called the animals to a race across a great river, and the order they finished would set the order of the years. Everyone expected the Dragon to win, since it could fly. Instead it arrived fifth.
When the Jade Emperor asked why, the Dragon explained that it had stopped to bring rain to people whose crops were drying out. In many tellings it also saw the little Rabbit clinging to a log and blew a breath of air to push it safely to shore. The Emperor was moved by its kindness.
It's a folk tale, told in many versions, not history. But it captures how the Dragon is seen in Chinese culture: powerful, yes, and generous with that power.
Year of the Dragon Birth Years and Exact Dates
Here are the Dragon years from 1928 to 2024.

| 2024 | Wood 木 | Yang | 甲辰 jiǎchén | Feb 10, 2024 | Jan 28, 2025 |
Born in January or early February? Check the dates carefully. The animal year begins at Lunar New Year, Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival, which falls between January 21 and February 20. Someone born on January 20, 2025 is still a Dragon, because the 2024 Dragon year ran until January 28, 2025. Someone born on February 1, 1988 is not a Dragon, because the 1988 Dragon year didn't start until February 17.
Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the Four Pillars birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the start of spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead. If your birthday falls near either date, it may be placed differently.
Dragon Babies and Dragon Years
The Dragon's reputation is so warm that it has shown up in birth records. Researchers have documented rises in births during Dragon years in several Chinese communities, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, as some parents hoped for a Dragon child. It's a striking sign of how much the tradition means to the people who keep it.
Dragon Personality: Traditional Traits
These are traditional associations. They describe tendencies, not fate. Your full chart, your life story and your own choices shape who you are far more than any one sign.
Strengths
The Dragon is confident, energetic and ambitious. She has presence; people tend to notice when she walks in. She thinks big, works hard for what she believes in, and has a generous streak that makes her want to lift others up with her. She's often a natural leader, even when she isn't trying to be.
Challenges
All that energy can run hot. A Dragon may be impatient with slower people, take on too much, or find it hard to admit she needs help. She can also set the bar so high that nothing feels like enough. Her growth often comes from slowing down and letting others share the load.
In Love
In love, the Dragon is passionate, loyal and wholehearted. She wants a partner who can match her energy and respects her independence, and she's happiest in a relationship that feels like a team. She may need to remember that tenderness and listening matter as much as grand gestures. Our Chinese zodiac compatibility guides are coming soon.
At Work
At work, the Dragon shines in roles that let her lead, build or create: business, management, entrepreneurship, law, the arts, public life. She's at her best with a big goal and room to run. For men born in Dragon years, the same gifts often show up as decisive leadership and strategic vision, with the best results coming when that confidence is paired with real listening and social intelligence.
As a Friend
As a friend, the Dragon is fiercely loyal and a little larger than life. She's the one who plans the trip, rallies everyone and shows up in a crisis. She expects honesty in return.
The Dragon's Fixed Element and Yin Yang Nature
Each animal has a fixed, or native, element that never changes. The Dragon's fixed element is Earth (土). For a creature so linked with sky and water, that may surprise you, but it gives the Dragon a grounded core under all its energy.
This is different from the year element, which changes with each Dragon year. The five elements, called Wǔxíng (五行), are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). They're also called the five phases, because each one turns into the next.
In yin and yang (阴阳), the Dragon is a yang animal, and every Dragon year is a yang year. The 60 year cycle pairs the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches. The stem gives the year its element, and yin and yang alternate year by year. Because the Dragon's branch is yang, it only pairs with the five yang stems, giving five kinds of Dragon. Our guide to the Chinese zodiac elements explains the whole cycle.
The Five Element Dragons
The elements relate through two cycles. In the generating cycle, xiāngshēng (相生), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, xiāngkè (相克), each element keeps another in check. Here's how each year element meets the Dragon's native Earth.
Wood Dragon (1964, 2024)
Wood holds Earth in check, the way roots hold soil. The Wood Dragon tends to be creative, curious and generous, more open to other people's ideas than other Dragons, with a gift for growing something new.
Fire Dragon (1976)
Fire makes Earth, so the year element feeds the Dragon's own. The Fire Dragon is often the most intense of the five: passionate, bold, magnetic and driven. Learning to pace herself is part of her path.
Earth Dragon (1928, 1988)
Year element and fixed element match, so this is the Dragon at her most grounded. The Earth Dragon tends to be steady, practical and fair, with big plans and the patience to carry them out.
Metal Dragon (1940, 2000)
Earth bears Metal, so this Dragon's energy turns toward strength and focus. The Metal Dragon is often determined, principled and direct, with a strong sense of right and wrong.
Water Dragon (1952, 2012)
Earth holds Water in its banks. The Water Dragon tends to be calmer and more perceptive than other Dragons, diplomatic and wise, with a talent for reading what people need.
What Kind of Year Is a Dragon Year?
A Dragon year brings bold, lively energy for everyone, not just people born under it. Traditionally it's seen as a strong, auspicious time for big plans, new ventures, courage and change. It's a good season to think bigger than usual, step into a role you've been circling, or start the project you've been putting off.
Dragon energy rewards confidence, but it works best with a plan. Big moves made with care tend to age better than big moves made in a rush.
The flavor changes with the element. A Wood Dragon year like 2024 leans toward growth and creativity. A Fire Dragon year, like the next one in 2036, leans toward passion and intensity. This describes a season, not a sentence. You stay in charge of what you do with it.
If you'd like to look at how a Dragon year, or any year, touches your own life, a reading can look at your personal chart and situation, not just your animal.

Your Own Dragon Year: Běnmìngnián
When your animal returns in the twelve year cycle, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年). In Chinese tradition, your own animal year is said to put you at odds with Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the current year. Even for the celebrated Dragon, it's traditionally treated as a year to move thoughtfully.
Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, such as red socks, red underwear or a red string bracelet, often given by a parent or relative. It's a practice many families keep, a quiet way of looking out for someone they love.
In our view, your Dragon year is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. Keep your big vision, and give your choices a little more time than usual. It's a good year to look after your rest, your relationships and your energy.
The Most Recent Dragon Year and the Next One
The most recent Dragon year was the Wood Dragon year, 甲辰 (jiǎchén), which ran from February 10, 2024 to January 28, 2025. The next Dragon year is the Fire Dragon, 丙辰 (bǐngchén), which begins on January 28, 2036 and runs to February 14, 2037.
Right now we're heading toward the 2027 Fire Goat year. For what it holds for Dragons and every other animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast. Year of the Dragon FAQ
What years are the Year of the Dragon?
Recent Dragon years are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. Each one begins at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so the exact date matters if you were born in January or early February. The 2024 Dragon year ran from February 10, 2024 to January 28, 2025.
Why is the Dragon the only mythical animal in the Chinese zodiac?
The other eleven animals are real creatures, while the lóng is a legendary one. No one knows exactly why it was included, but the dragon has been one of the most honored symbols in Chinese culture for thousands of years, linked with rain, water, strength and good fortune.
What does the Dragon symbolize in Chinese culture?
The lóng stands for strength, vitality, good fortune and the power of water and rain. Dragon Kings were honored as rulers of rivers and seas, and the dragon was long the emblem of the emperor. In Chinese tradition the dragon is a benevolent, protective force.
What element is the Dragon?
The Dragon's fixed, or native, element is Earth. Each Dragon year also carries a year element from the Heavenly Stem: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So someone born in 2000 is a Metal Dragon, while someone born in 1988 is an Earth Dragon, with Earth as both her fixed and year element.
Is 2024 a Wood Dragon year?
Yes. The 2024 Dragon year, 甲辰, is a Wood Dragon year. It began on February 10, 2024 and ended on January 28, 2025. Someone born in early February 2024, before Lunar New Year, belongs to the 2023 Water Rabbit year instead, so always check the exact date.
Is a Dragon year a good year to have a baby?
Many families in Chinese communities have long seen the Dragon year as an auspicious time for a birth, and researchers have recorded small baby booms in Dragon years. It's a cherished tradition, not a rule. Every child brings their own gifts, whatever year they're born in.
