Year of the Snake: Years, Traits and What the Snake Year Brings

Quick answer: The Snake (蛇 shé) is the sixth of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, and in Chinese tradition it stands for wisdom, intuition, grace and quiet determination. Snake years include 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025, each beginning at Lunar New Year rather than January 1. Every Snake year also carries one of five elements, so 1989 was an Earth Snake and 2025 a Wood Snake.

If you were born in a Snake year, you belong to one of the most thoughtful signs in the cycle. The Snake is admired for a sharp mind, a calm surface and the kind of intuition that sees what's really going on. Some people even call it xiǎolóng (小龙), the little dragon.

New to the system as a whole? Our guide to Chinese astrology lays out the basics. Then come back here for everything about the Snake.

The Snake in Chinese Astrology

The Chinese zodiac is called Shēngxiào (生肖). It follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar, not the Western calendar, and it's built on the older system of Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

Each animal matches one of the twelve Earthly Branches. The Snake belongs to the sixth branch, 巳 (sì). That branch also names a double hour of the traditional day, 9 to 11 a.m., the hour of the Snake, when the morning warms up.

The Snake follows the Dragon and comes just before the Horse. You can see all twelve together in our guide to the Chinese zodiac signs.

How the Snake Placed Sixth: The Great Race

According to legend, the Jade Emperor, Yùhuáng Dàdì (玉皇大帝), called the animals to a race across a wide river, and the order they finished would set the order of the years. The Snake knew it couldn't outrun the bigger animals. So in many tellings it quietly wrapped itself around the Horse's hoof and rode along unseen.

Just as the Horse was about to cross the finish, the Snake slid off in front of it. The startled Horse reared back, and the Snake took sixth place, with the Horse seventh.

It's a folk tale, and versions vary. Still, it shows how the Snake is seen: patient, observant and clever about timing.

The Snake in Chinese Legend

The Snake also appears in one of China's best known love stories. The Legend of the White Snake, Báishé Zhuàn (白蛇传), is counted among China's Four Great Folktales. It tells of Bái Sùzhēn (白素贞), a white snake spirit who takes human form and falls in love with a young man named Xǔ Xiān (许仙) beside West Lake in Hangzhou. The story has been retold in opera, film and television for generations, and it paints the Snake as devoted, wise and true to love.

Born in January or early February? Check the dates carefully. The animal year begins at Lunar New Year, Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival, which falls between January 21 and February 20. Someone born on February 10, 2026 is still a Snake, because the 2025 Snake year ran until February 16, 2026. Someone born on February 10, 1977 is not a Snake, because the 1977 Snake year didn't begin until February 18.

Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the Four Pillars birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the start of spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead. If your birthday falls near either date, it may be placed differently.

Snake Personality: Traditional Traits

These are traditional associations. They describe tendencies, not fate. Your full chart, your life story and your own choices shape who you are far more than any one sign.

Strengths

The Snake is wise, perceptive and calm under pressure. She thinks before she speaks, notices the details others miss, and often knows what someone means before they say it. She carries herself with quiet elegance and tends to have refined taste. When she decides on a goal, she pursues it with steady focus.

Challenges

Because she keeps so much inside, the Snake can come across as distant or hard to read. She may hold on to a hurt longer than she lets on, or keep plans so private that others feel left out. Her growth often comes from letting people in a little sooner.

In Love

In love, the Snake is deep, devoted and quietly romantic. She doesn't give her heart easily, but when she does, she means it. She values loyalty, privacy and real emotional connection over flash, and she needs a partner who earns her trust over time. Our Chinese zodiac compatibility guides are coming soon.

At Work

At work, the Snake excels where insight and strategy matter: research, finance, psychology, writing, design, planning and advising. She works best with room to think and doesn't need the spotlight to do excellent work. For men born in Snake years, the same gifts often show up as strategic thinking and sharp social intelligence, the ability to read a negotiation and make the right move at the right time.

As a Friend

As a friend, the Snake is a wise listener and a keeper of secrets. Her circle may be small, but she's the one people go to for honest, thoughtful advice.

The Snake's Fixed Element and Yin Yang Nature

Each animal has a fixed, or native, element that never changes. The Snake's fixed element is Fire (火). That inner Fire gives the cool, calm Snake its warmth, drive and hidden passion.

This is different from the year element, which changes with each Snake year. The five elements, called Wǔxíng (五行), are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). They're also called the five phases, because each one turns into the next.

In yin and yang (阴阳), the Snake is a yin animal, and every Snake year is a yin year. The 60 year cycle pairs the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches. The stem gives the year its element, and yin and yang alternate year by year. Because the Snake's branch is yin, it only pairs with the five yin stems, giving five kinds of Snake. Our guide to the Chinese zodiac elements explains the whole cycle.

The Five Element Snakes

The elements relate through two cycles. In the generating cycle, xiāngshēng (相生), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, xiāngkè (相克), each element keeps another in check. Here's how each year element meets the Snake's native Fire.

Wood Snake (1965, 2025)

Wood feeds Fire, so the year element feeds the Snake's own. The Wood Snake tends to be creative, warm and generous, with an artistic streak and a gift for long range planning.

Fire Snake (1977)

Year element and fixed element match, so this is the Snake at her most intense. The Fire Snake is often magnetic, ambitious and confident, with strong opinions and a determined spirit.

Earth Snake (1929, 1989)

Fire makes Earth, so this Snake's energy settles into something solid. The Earth Snake tends to be grounded, reliable and patient, a calm presence with good judgment.

Metal Snake (1941, 2001)

Fire controls Metal, shaping it the way a forge shapes a blade. The Metal Snake is often sharp minded, independent and decisive, with high standards and a strong will.

Water Snake (1953, 2013)

Water keeps Fire in check, cooling the Snake's intensity. The Water Snake tends to be the most intuitive and reflective of the five, perceptive, calm and good at reading people.

What Kind of Year Is a Snake Year?

A Snake year brings a quieter, more inward energy for everyone, not just people born under it. Traditionally it's seen as a season for reflection, strategy and careful planning. It's a good year to think before you leap, learn something deeply, refine what you've already started, and trust your instincts.

Snake energy rewards patience and preparation. Rather than rushing, it favors watching, learning and then moving with purpose.

The flavor changes with the element. A Wood Snake year like 2025 leans toward growth and creativity. A Fire Snake year, like the next one in 2037, leans toward drive and intensity. This describes a season, not a sentence. You stay in charge of what you do with it.

If you'd like to look at how a Snake year, or any year, touches your own life, a reading can look at your personal chart and situation, not just your animal.

Your Own Snake Year: Běnmìngnián

When your animal returns in the twelve year cycle, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年). In Chinese tradition, your own animal year is said to put you at odds with Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the current year, so it's traditionally treated as a year to take extra care.

Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, such as red socks, red underwear or a red string bracelet, often a gift from a parent or relative. It's a custom many families keep, a simple way of caring for one another as the year begins.

In our view, your Snake year is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. It suits the Snake's nature well: a time to reflect, take stock, look after your relationships and make important decisions with patience.

The Most Recent Snake Year and the Next One

The most recent Snake year was the Wood Snake year, 乙巳 (yǐsì), which ran from January 29, 2025 to February 16, 2026. The next Snake year is the Fire Snake, 丁巳 (dīngsì), which begins on February 15, 2037 and runs to February 3, 2038.

Right now we're in the Fire Horse year and heading toward the 2027 Fire Goat year. For what that year holds for Snakes and every other animal, see our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast. Recent Snake years are 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025. Each one begins at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so the exact date matters if you were born in January or February. The 2025 Snake year ran from January 29, 2025 to February 16, 2026.

What does the Snake symbolize in Chinese culture?
In Chinese tradition the Snake is linked with wisdom, intuition, elegance and patience. It's sometimes called the little dragon, xiǎolóng. The Legend of the White Snake, one of China's Four Great Folktales, also shows the Snake as loyal and devoted in love.

What element is the Snake?
The Snake's fixed, or native, element is Fire. Each Snake year also carries a year element from the Heavenly Stem: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So someone born in 2001 is a Metal Snake, while someone born in 1977 is a Fire Snake, with Fire as both her fixed and year element.

Was 2025 a Wood Snake year?
Yes. The 2025 Snake year, 乙巳, was a Wood Snake year. It began on January 29, 2025 and ended on February 16, 2026. Someone born on January 20, 2025, before Lunar New Year, belongs to the 2024 Wood Dragon year instead, so always check the exact date.

Is a Snake year a bad year?
No. In Chinese tradition the Snake year is a time for wisdom, reflection and careful planning, not something to fear. If it's your own animal year, tradition suggests moving thoughtfully, and many people wear red as a custom of care. How the year unfolds is shaped by your own choices.

When is the next Year of the Snake?
The next Snake year is the Fire Snake year, 丁巳, which begins on February 15, 2037 and ends on February 3, 2038. The current Fire Horse year began on February 17, 2026, and the cycle moves through the remaining animals, one each Lunar New Year, until the Snake returns.
