Year of the Tiger: Years, Traits and What the Tiger Year Brings
Quick answer: The Tiger (虎 hǔ) is the third of the twelve animals in Shēngxiào (生肖), the Chinese zodiac, and belongs to the Earthly Branch 寅 (yín). Tiger years include 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022, and each one begins at Lunar New Year, not January 1. Every Tiger year also carries one of the five elements, so 2022 was a Water Tiger year. Tradition links the Tiger with courage, warmth and bold energy.
If you were born in a Tiger year, people may have called you brave, restless or a natural leader. There's much more to the Tiger than that. This guide looks at the Tiger on its own terms, with every Tiger year and its exact dates, the five element versions of the Tiger, and what tradition says about your own Tiger year. Where the Tiger Sits in the Chinese Zodiac
Chinese astrology counts time with the Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. There are ten stems and twelve branches. Each year pairs one stem with one branch, and because ten and twelve line up again only every sixty years, the full cycle runs sixty years before it repeats.
Each branch has an animal. The Tiger belongs to 寅 (yín), the third branch, after the Rat and the Ox and just before the Rabbit. The stem decides the year's element. So the Tiger returns every twelve years, but the same Tiger and element pairing returns only every sixty.
The stems and branches system is attested on Shang dynasty oracle bones. Animals linked to the branches appear in Qin dynasty bamboo texts excavated at Shuìhǔdì (睡虎地) in the 3rd century BCE, and a fuller standard list appears by the Eastern Han in Wang Chong's Lùnhéng (论衡).
According to legend, the order of the animals was set by a Great Race called by the Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝 Yùhuáng Dàdì). In a popular version, the Tiger arrived third. Strong as it was, it told the Jade Emperor the river's currents kept pushing it downstream. Versions differ, but the Tiger is usually remembered for raw strength and the grit to keep going.
Tiger Years and Dates, 1926 to 2022
The animal year starts at Chūnjié (春节), the Spring Festival, also called Lunar New Year. That date moves each year, landing between January 21 and February 20.
| Year | Element | Yin/Yang | Stem Branch | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1926 | Fire (火) | Yang | 丙寅 bǐngyín | Feb 13, 1926 | Feb 1, 1927 |
| 1938 | Earth (土) | Yang | 戊寅 wùyín | Jan 31, 1938 | Feb 18, 1939 |
| 1950 | Metal (金) | Yang | 庚寅 gēngyín | Feb 17, 1950 | Feb 5, 1951 |
| 1962 | Water (水) | Yang | 壬寅 rényín | Feb 5, 1962 | Jan 24, 1963 |
| 1974 | Wood (木) | Yang | 甲寅 jiǎyín | Jan 23, 1974 | Feb 10, 1975 |

| 2010 | Metal (金) | Yang | 庚寅 gēngyín | Feb 14, 2010 | Feb 2, 2011 |
| 2022 | Water (水) | Yang | 壬寅 rényín | Feb 1, 2022 | Jan 21, 2023 |
Born in January or early February? Check the start date before you claim the Tiger. Someone born January 15, 1974 belongs to the Water Ox year of 1973, because that Ox year ran until January 22, 1974. On the other side, someone born February 3, 1951 is still a Metal Tiger, because the 1950 Tiger year ran until February 5, 1951.
Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the Four Pillars birth chart, often use Lìchūn (立春), the Start of Spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead of Lunar New Year. If your birthday falls between those two dates, a Bāzì reader may place you in a different year than the Lunar New Year calendar does.
Tiger Personality: Traditional Traits
These are traditional associations, not fixed fate. Read them as tendencies you might recognize, then hold them up against your own life.
Strengths
The Tiger is linked with courage, confidence and a big, generous heart. Tiger people tend to stand up for others, speak honestly and take the first step when everyone else hesitates. They often bring energy into a room without trying.
Challenges
That same fire can run ahead of good timing. A Tiger may act on impulse, push back hard against being controlled or lose patience with slow processes. Restlessness is common. Her growth often comes from pausing long enough to choose her battles.
In Love
In love, the Tiger tends to be passionate, warm and wholehearted. She loves boldly and protects the people she cares about. She also needs room to be herself, and a partner who respects her independence usually gets her deepest loyalty. Chinese compatibility guides for every animal are coming soon to this series.
At Work
At work the Tiger is often a natural leader or the person who champions a cause. She's good at starting things, rallying people and making hard calls. Close supervision tends to chafe. Roles with room for initiative usually bring out her best.
As a Friend
A Tiger friend is fun, loyal and fiercely protective. She'll tell you the truth even when it's uncomfortable, and she'll be first in line to defend you. Life around her is rarely dull.
For men born in Tiger years, these traits often show up as decisive problem solving and the social intelligence to lead without steamrolling. Knowing when to act and when to listen is a real Tiger strength.
The Tiger's Fixed Element and Yang Nature
Every animal has a fixed, or native, element that never changes, separate from the element of the year you were born. The Tiger's fixed element is Wood (木). Wood stands for growth, reach and new beginnings, which helps explain the Tiger's forward drive.
The Tiger is a yang animal within yin and yang (阴阳). Yang energy is active, outward and initiating. You can see it in the table above: every Tiger year is a yang year, paired with one of the five yang stems.
The five elements are called Wǔxíng (五行), often translated as five phases because they describe energies that move and change. In the generating cycle, 相生 (xiāngshēng), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, 相克 (xiāngkè), Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal and Metal cuts Wood. Our Chinese zodiac elements guide goes deeper.
The Five Kinds of Tiger
Your birth year's element, set by the Heavenly Stem, colors the Tiger's Wood nature in its own way.
Wood Tiger (1974)
Here the year element matches the fixed element, so Wood is doubled. The Wood Tiger is traditionally the most open minded and sociable Tiger, generous with ideas and people. Her lesson is finishing what she so happily starts.
Fire Tiger (1926, 1986)
Wood feeds Fire in the generating cycle, so the Tiger's Wood fuels the year's Fire. The Fire Tiger is often the most passionate and expressive of the five. She inspires people easily, and pacing herself keeps that spark burning long term.
Earth Tiger (1938, 1998)
In the controlling cycle Wood parts Earth, so the Tiger works the Earth of her year. The Earth Tiger tends to be the most practical and patient Tiger. She thinks before she leaps and builds steadily toward what she wants.
Metal Tiger (1950, 2010)
Metal cuts Wood in the controlling cycle, which gives the Metal Tiger a sharp, determined edge. She's often intense, principled and hard to sway. Learning to bend a little helps her strength go further.
Water Tiger (1962, 2022)
Water nourishes Wood in the generating cycle, so the year's Water supports the Tiger's native element. The Water Tiger is often the calmest and most intuitive Tiger, perceptive about people and open to new ways of seeing things.
What a Tiger Year Brings for Everyone
When the Tiger rules the year, the whole calendar tends to take on Tiger energy. Tradition reads these as bold, fast moving years. Change tends to arrive quickly, and courage, initiative and new starts get a boost.
Tiger years can feel lively and a little unpredictable, especially after a slower, steady Ox year. The best use of that energy is brave action with a clear head. It's a good season to speak up, start what you've been putting off and stand behind what matters to you, while checking your impulses before big decisions.

Your Own Tiger Year: Běnmìngnián
When your own animal comes back around, every twelve years, that year is your Běnmìngnián (本命年). Tradition holds that in your animal year you're said to offend Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the year, so it's seen as a year to move carefully and thoughtfully.
Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, often red underwear, red socks or a red string, usually given by a loved one. It's a custom many families keep, and it carries a lot of love along with tradition.
In our view, your Tiger year is best seen as a season to stay thoughtful and grounded. For a Tiger, who naturally leans toward action, that can be a welcome change of pace. It's a good time to look back over the last twelve years and choose where your energy goes next.
The Most Recent and Next Tiger Year
The most recent Tiger year was the Water Tiger year of 2022 (壬寅 rényín), which ran from February 1, 2022 to January 21, 2023. The Tiger returns as the Wood Tiger, 甲寅 (jiǎyín), from February 19, 2034 to February 7, 2035.
The Lunar New Year cycle is now moving from the 2026 Fire Horse year into the 2027 Fire Goat year. For what 2027 holds for the Tiger and every other animal, read our Chinese New Year 2027 forecast.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Year of the Tiger
What years are the Year of the Tiger?
Tiger years from 1924 to 2031 are 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022. Each one begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20, so the start date changes every year. If your birthday is in January or early February, check the table above to see if you're a Tiger or an Ox.
What element is my Tiger year?
The element comes from the Heavenly Stem of your birth year. Fire Tiger years are 1926 and 1986, Earth Tiger years 1938 and 1998, Metal Tiger years 1950 and 2010, Water Tiger years 1962 and 2022, and the Wood Tiger year is 1974. This is separate from the Tiger's fixed element, which is always Wood.
What is the Tiger personality like?
Tradition links the Tiger with courage, confidence, generosity and natural leadership. Tiger people tend to be protective, honest and full of energy. Common challenges include impulsiveness, restlessness and pushing back against control. These are traditional tendencies rather than fixed fate, and your whole chart and life experience shape who you are.
Is the Tiger yin or yang?
The Tiger is a yang animal, so every Tiger year pairs with a yang Heavenly Stem, as the dates table shows. Yang energy is active, outward and initiating, which fits the Tiger's bold reputation. The Ox before it and the Rabbit after it are both yin, because yin and yang alternate through the twelve animals.
What was the 2022 Water Tiger year?
The 2022 Water Tiger year, 壬寅 (rényín), ran from February 1, 2022 to January 21, 2023. Water nourishes Wood in the generating cycle, so the year's Water supported the Tiger's native Wood. Tradition reads that pairing as bold Tiger energy softened by Water's perception and adaptability.
What does Běnmìngnián mean for a Tiger?
Běnmìngnián is the return of your own animal year, every twelve years. By tradition, you're said to offend Tài Suì that year, so it's a time to move carefully. Many people wear red as a protective custom given by loved ones. For an action loving Tiger, we see it as a season to slow down and stay grounded.
