Year of the Rat: Years, Traits and What the Rat Year Brings

Quick answer: The Rat (鼠 shǔ) is the first of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, and in Chinese tradition it stands for cleverness, resourcefulness and wealth. Rat years include 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2020, each beginning at Lunar New Year rather than January 1. Every Rat year also carries one of five elements, so 1984 was a Wood Rat and 2020 a Metal Rat.

If you were born in a Rat year, you belong to the animal that opens the whole cycle. In Chinese culture the Rat is admired as quick, observant and good at turning a little into a lot, and it has long been tied to abundance.

The Rat in Chinese Astrology

The Chinese zodiac is called Shēngxiào (生肖). It follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar, not the Western calendar, and it grew out of an older system called Tiāngān Dìzhī (天干地支), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The stems and branches are attested on Shang dynasty oracle bones, where they were used to count days.

Each animal is matched to one of the twelve Earthly Branches. The Rat belongs to the first branch, 子 (zǐ). That same branch also marks the first double hour of the traditional day, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., called the hour of the Rat.

One of the earliest known written links between the branches and specific animals appears in Qin dynasty bamboo texts excavated at Shuìhǔdì (睡虎地), from the 3rd century BCE. Fuller standard lists of the animals appear by the Eastern Han, including in Wang Chong's Lùnhéng (论衡) in the 1st century CE. You can meet all twelve in our guide to the Chinese zodiac signs.

Why the Rat Comes First: The Great Race

According to legend, the Jade Emperor, Yùhuáng Dàdì (玉皇大帝), called the animals to a great race, and the order they finished would set the order of the years. To reach him, the animals had to cross a wide river.

The Rat was small and not a strong swimmer, so it asked the kind, hardworking Ox for a ride across. Just as the Ox reached the far bank, the Rat leapt from its back and scampered to the finish ahead of it. The Rat placed first and the Ox second. In many tellings the Cat was meant to race too, and the Rat's cleverness kept it out of the twelve, which is said to be why cats chase rats to this day.

Versions differ, and it's a folk tale rather than history. Still, it shows how the Rat is seen: not the strongest, but the one who reads the situation and finds a way. In Vietnam, the zodiac has the Cat in place of the Rabbit. It's a regional tradition in its own right.

Born in January or early February? Check the dates carefully. The animal year starts at Lunar New Year, Chūnjié (春节), also called the Spring Festival, which falls between January 21 and February 20. Someone born on January 20, 1985 is still a Rat, because the 1984 Rat year ran until February 19, 1985. Someone born on February 1, 1972 is not a Rat at all, because the 1972 Rat year began on February 15.

Practitioners of Bāzì (八字), the detailed Four Pillars birth chart, use Lìchūn (立春), the start of spring around February 4, as the year boundary instead, so a birthday near either date may be placed differently.

Rat Personality: Traditional Traits

These are traditional associations, and they describe tendencies, not fate. Your full chart, your upbringing and your own choices all shape who you are.

Strengths

The Rat is quick witted and observant. She notices what others miss, from a shift in someone's mood to an opportunity no one else has spotted. She's resourceful, practical and good with money, the kind of woman who can stretch a budget, find the right person to call, and always seems to have a backup plan.

Challenges

That busy mind can turn toward worry. A Rat may overthink, hold her cards close, or hang on to resources a little too tightly in case lean times come. Her growth often comes from trusting others with more and letting a plan be good enough.

In Love

In love, the Rat tends to be attentive and devoted once she feels safe. She shows care in practical ways: remembering what you said, solving the problem you mentioned in passing, building a secure home. She may be cautious at first and open up slowly. Our Chinese zodiac compatibility guides are coming soon.

At Work

At work the Rat shines in roles that reward sharp thinking and good judgment: business, finance, research, writing, sales, planning. She spots trends early and likes to be prepared. For men born in Rat years, the same gifts show up as social intelligence, reading a room well and solving practical problems before anyone else sees them coming.

As a Friend

As a friend, the Rat is the one who knows someone, has a tip, and shows up with exactly what you needed. She's loyal to her inner circle and generous with the people she trusts, even if that circle is small.

The Rat's Fixed Element and Yin Yang Nature

Each animal carries a fixed, or native, element that never changes. The Rat's fixed element is Water (水). Like water, the Rat adapts and finds its way around obstacles.

This is different from the year element, which changes with each Rat year. The five elements, called Wǔxíng (五行), are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). They're also called the five phases, because they change into one another.

In terms of yin and yang (阴阳), the Rat is a yang animal, and every Rat year is a yang year. The 60 year cycle pairs the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches. The stem sets the year's element, and yin and yang alternate year by year. Because the Rat's branch is yang, it only ever pairs with the five yang stems, giving five kinds of Rat. Learn more in our guide to the Chinese zodiac elements.

The Five Element Rats

The elements relate through two cycles. In the generating cycle, xiāngshēng (相生), Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, xiāngkè (相克), each element keeps another in check. Here's how each year element meets the Rat's native Water.

Wood Rat (1924, 1984)

Water nourishes Wood, so the Wood Rat pours her cleverness into growth. She tends to be warm, creative and a little more open than other Rats, with a knack for bringing people together.

Fire Rat (1936, 1996)

Here the Rat's Water meets the year's Fire, and Water controls Fire. The Fire Rat is often bold, energetic and quick to act, with a warmth that draws people in.

Earth Rat (1948, 2008)

Earth controls Water, giving it banks to flow between. The Earth Rat tends to be the most grounded of the Rats: careful, practical, patient and steady with money and commitments.

Metal Rat (1960, 2020)

Metal carries Water, so the year's element feeds the Rat's own. The Metal Rat is often determined, focused and ambitious, with strong instincts about value.

Water Rat (1972)

Year element and fixed element match, so this is the Rat at her most Rat. The Water Rat tends to be deeply perceptive, diplomatic and adaptable, reading people with ease. She may need to watch for absorbing other people's moods.

What Kind of Year Is a Rat Year?

Because the Rat opens the cycle, a Rat year carries the energy of beginnings for everyone, not just people born under it. Traditionally it's seen as a good season to plant seeds: start projects, set up good habits, look at your finances, and gather resources for the years ahead.

Rat energy favors the alert and the prepared. Rather than one big leap, think many smart small moves.

The flavor shifts with the element. A Metal Rat year like 2020 leans toward focus and determination. A Wood Rat year leans toward growth and new connections. This describes a season, not a sentence. You stay in charge of what you do with it.

If you'd like to look at how a Rat year, or any year, touches your own life, a reading can look at your personal chart and situation, not just your animal.

Your Own Rat Year: Běnmìngnián

When your own animal year comes back around, every twelve years, it's called Běnmìngnián (本命年). Tradition holds that in your own animal year you're said to offend Tài Suì (太岁), the deity associated with the current year. For that reason it's traditionally seen as a year to move carefully.

Many people wear red during their Běnmìngnián as a protective custom, often red underwear, red socks or a red string, frequently given by a parent or relative. It's a custom many families keep, a way of being looked after as the year turns.

In our view, your Rat year is best treated as a season to be thoughtful and grounded. It's a good time to review where you are, look after yourself and your relationships, and make decisions with care rather than in a rush.

The Most Recent Rat Year and the Next One

The most recent Rat year was the Metal Rat year, 庚子 (gēngzǐ), which ran from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2021. The next Rat year is the Water Rat, 壬子 (rénzǐ), which begins on February 11, 2032 and runs to January 30, 2033.

Year of the Rat FAQ

What years are the Year of the Rat?
Recent Rat years are 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2020. Each one begins at Lunar New Year, not January 1, so the exact dates matter if you were born in January or early February. The 2020 Rat year ran from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2021.

Why is the Rat first in the Chinese zodiac?
According to the legend of the Great Race, the Rat rode across the river on the Ox's back and jumped ahead at the last moment to finish first. Versions of the tale differ, and it's a legend rather than history. The Rat's place also matches the first Earthly Branch, 子 (zǐ).

What does the Rat symbolize in Chinese culture?
In Chinese tradition the Rat is associated with cleverness, resourcefulness and wealth. It's seen as quick, observant and good at gathering and keeping what it needs. Because it opens the twelve year cycle, the Rat is also linked with beginnings and the start of something new.

What element is the Rat?
The Rat's fixed, or native, element is Water. Each Rat year also carries a year element from the Heavenly Stem, which can be Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. So someone born in 1984 is a Wood Rat, while someone born in 1972 is a Water Rat, with Water as both her fixed and year element.

Is 2020 a Metal Rat year?
Yes. The 2020 Rat year, 庚子, is a Metal Rat year. It began on January 25, 2020 and ended on February 11, 2021. Someone born in January 2020, before Lunar New Year, belongs to the 2019 Earth Pig year instead, so always check the exact date of your birthday.

Should a Rat wear red in a Rat year?
Many people wear red during their own animal year, often red socks, underwear or a red string given by a loved one. It's a protective custom many families keep for Běnmìngnián. Following it is your choice. We see your Rat year as a time to stay thoughtful and grounded.
